Pepsi, New Bottles

Pepsi Bottles

Update: Another friendly reader has sent in cans for Pepsi and Sierra Mist.

Update 2: A photo of actual cans posted on Fark has been added here. And the goodies keep coming in! Let it be known that the week of October 20, 2008 has been declared as Pepsi Week at Brand New. A kind reader has sent in these renderings of the new bottles. Redeeming or just digging a deeper hole? You decide.

The pepsi bottles sure do resemble wrinkly penis'.

Entry Divider

adzski's comment is:

Yuck. The font and layout make me want to cry.

Then there is the logo. Or logos. Hey - why have one logo when you can have three?

I can't get the "Terrence and Philip" connection out of my head.

Even the new design with the old logo would have been better.

Entry Divider

dg3's comment is:

I gotta say, I'm sorta digging that Mtn Dew bottle.

The Pepsi one? Ewww.

Entry Divider

Neven's comment is:

No one's going to notice the difference in logos. It's not just subtle; it's a silly idea.

I'm having a hard time focusing on the labels since the bottles are so hideous. Why on earth would you bring back the aesthetic of crappy boomboxes of the early 90s?

The labels are downright uninspired. There's not much else to say.

Boring and pointless.

Entry Divider

Damian's comment is:

I am guilty of liking the new logos now mocked up on the bottles. Is it just me, or do those logos look like they want to vote for Obama?

Entry Divider

Tony's comment is:

What's the "cal carb sug" thing about?

Entry Divider

jenny's comment is:

As if the bottle wasn't phallic enough, they had to go and add foreskin. Ugh.

Entry Divider

jenny's comment is:

Tony: What's the "cal carb sug" thing about?

That circle above those words is a zero.

Entry Divider

Keffer's comment is:

I've nothing to say except :

Oh damn i really hate the pepsi new brand.

Incredible, an art director make this ! Or maybe not an AD, i hope.

Entry Divider

vectr's comment is:

Pepsi: The other caffeinated sugar water.

They all look like ripples centered on this logo.

What sized white line do you want?

(@Deaner: wrinkly penii indeed)

Entry Divider

Tony's comment is:

jenny: "That circle above those words is a zero."

So I gathered. The whole thing is weird, though.

Entry Divider

Fabian Marchinko's comment is:

Someone F up big time...this makes me want to baff the coke I just drank.

Entry Divider

Prescott Perez-Fox's comment is:

The new mtn dew bottle is pretty sharp. I like how the ripples on the bottle tie in with the patterns of the label.

Entry Divider

Demers Designs's comment is:

I think I am guilty of digging the font. The rest of the design however, looks like a designer's attempt to prove to an executive that the original logo and packaging don't need to be updated. Just my 2 cents.

Entry Divider

Chris Lee's comment is:

I'm amazed at how poorly this was done.
The new pepsi logo just looks like the old logo, except the white bar is now poorly distorted. Also, it doesn't look like a smile -- without the explanation, no one will understand why it looks the way it does. That is poor logo design.

On top of that MTN Dew will be changed back in a very short time -- it has absolutely NO staying power.

That said, I at LEAST admire that the bottles are simple. One step forward, 20 back.

Entry Divider

Jw's comment is:

still liking the MTNDEW look, but yeah, the wrinkled-flesh pepsi look is not doing it for me at all.

Entry Divider

Amy's comment is:

I totally don't see how those are supposed to look like smiles. I'm not a fan.

Entry Divider

Leslie's comment is:

The pepsi typeface looks really great... if this is 1998. It looks dated today -- it's going to look incredibly out of date in five years.

Entry Divider

Ricky Irvine's comment is:

I really think Pepsi is going to lose big time on this. They're completely oblivious to 'real food' is taking over our nation. This looks like a science experiment — not something you'd want to drink. It's cold in an impersonal way (as opposed to cold like beer).

Entry Divider

NONE's comment is:

they won't last, it'll be the biggest waste of money. I give it 2-3 yrs and they'll revert to the old logo..

Entry Divider

Clem's comment is:

Uncircumcised and Diet Uncircumcised....

Entry Divider

twoeightnine's comment is:

Ribbed for her pleasure.

Entry Divider

Alan's comment is:

I've always thought that's Pepsi' branding efforts have been way too fad-ish. It always comes off as trying to be cool and hip, which invariably just means that you'll have to change it in 2-5 years or end up looking old and stupid. This design will be gone pretty soon.

Entry Divider

Alan's comment is:

I add one exception to my complaints: the new MTN DEW look is great. The mountain motif of the background is clean and well-executed.

Entry Divider

Guubir's comment is:

Is too bad. I like old Pepsi logo.

Entry Divider

George - LogoDesign.org's comment is:

I'm actually digging them, especially the Mountain Dew bottle. I like the changes to the Pepsi emblems as well, I've never been a fan of the old one, can't say I like the new pepsi font at all though.

Entry Divider

adzski's comment is:

I've tried to understand it, i've looked at it, and thought about it, but i just don't get it. Could someone explain to me the significance of the "diet pepsi = small gap (or 'grin'), pepsi = medium gap (or 'smile'), pepsi max = big gap (or 'grimace')" thing? I don't see the smiles, for a start - without really trying to. But even if they are smiles, why the difference? Pepsi is less "happy" than Pepsi Max?
I know I've said it before on this page, but: Yuck.

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

Wow not much an improvement, all the bottles except Mountain Dew and the Diet Pepsi one look bad.

The Mountain Dew one works, decent logo and makes interesting white space, the two other Pepsi one are just off the charts awful. At least the Diet Pepsi one looks Coca-Cola-esque.

I HATE the grin, couldn't they at least retain some of the symmetry of the old logo? Why can't look like the old logo AND a smile????

this sucks.

Entry Divider

nandovt's comment is:

everything that coca-cola succeeded in its history, pepsi failed. they just run after and after.
this new logo (if it is realy true and not just a marketing test) least for some years ang get old very fast. the typeface is weak, the new pacman smile is not nice, and the pennis bottle is meaningless. i think that pepsi should let coca-cola to be clean, and go straight to the other way, using the opportunity to create something new. but i don't thing they want this with this new spiritless project.

Entry Divider

Jordan's comment is:

OMG! I completely took back what I said. The bottles are....hypnotizing. There beautiful. I dont know why but the combination of the logo and the bottles looks so wonderful. I guess I am used to see the Pepsi cans/bottles cluttered with Promotions and Pepsi Stuff info. The bottles are just so...clean. I love them!

Entry Divider

nandovt's comment is:

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

take a good long look at this logo before it goes away, so you don't forget what it looks like, this re-brand of the logo is a travesty, they dumped this for some poorly done "smile" concept *facepalm*

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

If they dumped the damn "smile" it wouldn't look so bad.

Entry Divider

Grant's comment is:

uh...Gatorade, where are you?

Entry Divider

EUnismo's comment is:

would this look better?

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

Where's the Gatorade one I want to see what that horrible G looks like on a bottle.

please?

Entry Divider

Qwerty's comment is:

No cans? I wanna see the cans!

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

I'm curious as to WHY the smiles are facing to the LEFT, as opposed to the RIGHT, it looks like it looking BACKWARD and not FORWARD.

Entry Divider

Colin's comment is:

It's so easy to bash redesigns and rebrandings.

These look good. I don't think they'll save the Pepsi brand, but they're still really good.

The wave-to-smile shift is so subtle and clever, I think we'll all be applauding Pepsi down the road.

Entry Divider

Ryan's comment is:

Eww... early April Fool's joke?

Entry Divider

Kakairo's comment is:

Pepsi Max (sorry, I mean pepsi max) doesn't even look like a Pepsi product, especially with the red, white, and black logo.

At least I won't have to boycott my favorite PepsiCo product, Mountain Dew (I will not abbreviate that). The new logo works in conjunction with the abstract mountains and hills. It actually makes the bottle look more "grown up," as compared to the slashes and bolder colors of the current design.

Entry Divider

docatomic's comment is:

Don't you get it? It's a banner - see:

http://www.scripophily.com/webcart/vigs/embotelladoramadrilenavig.jpg

As for all of those who've mentioned "old logo", I say: which one? Any product that's been around for morte than a century is bound to have had more'n a few of 'em.

Entry Divider

Mark H's comment is:

Looks to me as if they are going for the Turner Duckworth approach: reducing to the maximum until you are left with an timeless icon. It worked fantastic for coke but fails miserably here.

Entry Divider

Robert's comment is:

Earmuffs, children.

Ahem...THIS IS FUCKING TERRIBLE.

Sure, it's easy to anonymously criticize from the safety of my desk, but Jesus. Are these leftover props from Minority Report or something? Yuck.

Entry Divider

rickyaustin's comment is:

So I guess Pepsi's clusterfuck packaging didn't work?

I hope this logo is a huge misunderstanding. If not, this is brand butchering.

Entry Divider

Naka's comment is:

These are pretty bad, the smile logo doesn't make much sense, seems like they're trying to hard to make a statement. The Mountain Dew bottle isn't terrible, but the fact that it's abbreviated to "Mtn" is annoying.

Entry Divider

Rico's comment is:

I'm still skeptical of this. I'll believe it when I see it on the shelf.

Entry Divider

Jeff's comment is:

Still snore-core. I guess animation is their last shot at redemption.

Entry Divider

Anon's comment is:

So all you dog owners will know what I am talking about here but you know when your dog is hunched over and is taking a big pile of shit? Well some times the rectum slides a little outside the dogs cavity and it has this sort of bulging rippled layered look to it. Well that's what the tops of the new Pepsi bottles resemble. See if you can go without thinking of that the next time you place your lips on the new heaps of dog shit.

Entry Divider

Stephen's comment is:

Yikes... I'm having a hard time believing this is real... this just doesn't seem like a move they would make.

Hmmm... at the very least, if this is truth, then it'll just reinforce my love for Coke all the more. :)

Entry Divider

Robin's comment is:

Something about the angles of the supposed "smiles" reminds me of the Old Spice logo.

I'm betting this turn out to be a scheme à la Coke Classic - they'll keep this logo for a while, then return to the older (better) logo so we'll all remember how great Pepsi used to be. Going retro is just another way to squeeze out some cash!

Entry Divider

Kaz's comment is:

The "e" in pepsi looks like it's sick and it's gonna throw up, maybe from seeing the bottles...

Entry Divider

Glenn's comment is:

AAARGH, MY EYES!

Entry Divider

reyarts.com's comment is:

A good? viral campaign.
Hopefully.

Entry Divider

Simon's comment is:

I lake the bottles. I lake the label. But the new logo is horrible. Just use the classic logo. Put the black insted of blue on the pepsi max, but not this stupid "smile".

Entry Divider

loren's comment is:

i think the goal is to make Pepsi look progressive, almost futuristic. trick people into thinking it's changed and has surpassed Coke. i think it sort of works on that level, the overall feel is new and fresh, especially for Pepsi. i think everyone is just complaining about the details.

and i agree that the smiles aren't going to be noticed. i'd rather see just one good Pepsi globe.

Entry Divider

Paulo's comment is:

Pepsi it's already doing a good job spreading this new identity in blogs.

Entry Divider

AL's comment is:

I don't know... maybe from a business perspective it will make a change. But this looks TERRIBLE for crying out loud!

Entry Divider

John Mindiola III's comment is:

Well, it was nice knowing you Pepsi. I'm going to spend the rest of my life NOT drinking you anymore. Yuck, it's so hard to believe this is actually real.

Entry Divider

som call me tim.'s comment is:

My only gripe is why have a minimalist logo with a very decorative phallic bottle? you would think minimal logo... minimal bottle styling. not minimal logo, penis bottle.

Entry Divider

Jacob's comment is:

The 0 cal carb sug thing is especially obnoxious.

Entry Divider

Lonnie's comment is:

So does this mean that I will smile more if I drink Pepsi Max vs. Diet Pepsi?

Entry Divider

matt's comment is:

This confirms that Pepsi has lost their damn minds. Anyone who thinks this looks good, a step in the right direction, gonna make sales soar, Step away from the computer, go back to the sketch book and start all over.

The labels DON'T have any design to them. There is nothing at all visually pleasing look at. One might say "o, it's minimalistic.' Bullshit, this is crap and a disgrace to graphic design!!!

Go buy a packaging design book and get inspired, stupid fucks...

Entry Divider

Armin's comment is:

There is no need for such language, the same point can be made without resulting to insults.

Just think about if someone called you a stupid fuck in relationship to your work.

Please show some cordiality. Criticism is fine, personal attacks like that are not.

Entry Divider

Ryan's comment is:

If Back To The Future 2 had taught me anything, the new Pepsi logos in 2015 will look like this....

Entry Divider

Bb's comment is:

Corn + Sulfuric Acid = Hi Fructose Corn Syrup = barf
Corn Syrup + Pepsi recipe + new design = barf
Conclusion, If you have to drink a soda go for a Coca Cola. At least they appear to know what they're doing from a branding standpoint. Still can't get over the corn syrup awfulness.

Entry Divider

kris's comment is:

I totally dig the MTN Dew, the rest are mediocre - and I hate the wrinkly bottles.

Entry Divider

peter's comment is:

REALLY dislike these....

Entry Divider

Pedro Rocha's comment is:

well... the bottles go for sophistication, whereas the logo goes for friendliness...

by the way... this obviously means that more sugar = more smilling , right?

Entry Divider

Sarah Obama's comment is:

I'm happy this Pepsi redesign is turning into such a train wreck. In this scary economic climate it almost guarantees work (on a re-redesign) for some lucky design firm.

Regards
A graphic artist who see the glass half full.

Entry Divider

matt's comment is:

is this pepsi's attempt to copy coke? Coke reverted back to the basic can design, all red with just the logo, no more of the little bubbles all over the place and multiple swoosh's.

Can't pepsi be original, why be like someone else? Being yourself is better and will earn you more praise and respect in the long run...

Entry Divider

Seabiscuit's comment is:

sad day... hope consumers can see through this

Entry Divider

Goffredo Puccetti's comment is:

"It's so easy to bash redesigns and rebrandings."

I must admit that it is getting scarily easy.

Entry Divider

Armin's comment is:

Update: Another friendly reader has sent in cans for Pepsi and Sierra Mist.

Entry Divider

Blue's comment is:

You know what ... I changed my mind. I'm actually quite liking the new logo now that I've seen them on the bottles.

I didn't like the asymmetry of the new icon at first (but did like the typeface) but I think it really works here: it makes the product look quite 'alien': odd, otherworldly, unfamiliar.

... also, dare I say it - somewhat 'Japanese'.

I love it!

Entry Divider

Calophi's comment is:

I really like the Sierra Mist can, but those Pepsi bottles...eurgh. They're awful.

Entry Divider

damon's comment is:

totally sucks the bag man.

fuck whoever did this, not one redeeming quality beyond the fact that the mtn dew graphic appears to have used some type of topographic map treatment.

topographic maps are rad...

Entry Divider

Ragdoll's comment is:

I gotta say, I like the new look of the labels. It's nice, clean, and sharp. The new smile logos don't bother me at all. They're not perfect (The logo should align to the left with the text; the Pepsi can comes closest to doing this), but they're better than the unnecessarily complex can designs of the last decade.

It's too bad the Mtn Dew and Sierra Mist labels didn't take cues from the Pepsi stuff and keep their packaging crisp and clean. (Same with the bottle designs.) Imagine these labels on a smooth, glass bottle. That would be about perfect.

Still wouldn't convince me to drink Pepsi, though.

Entry Divider

Nate's comment is:

Why is it that the vertical text is facing the wrong way? Didn't they learn in Type 101 that text on it's side should read top-to-bottom, not the other way around?

And what's with the obsession with smiles? Are they trying to play off of Coke's "Have a coke and a smile" tagline? I would have thought they could be more original.

Entry Divider

Armin's comment is:

> fuck whoever did this

Seriously stop the cursing. It's immature and unnecessary.

Entry Divider

LB's comment is:

My first reaction was to laugh. Maybe it's those smiley faces having a good chuckle that did it. While I appreciate the simplicity of the design, it's so sparse it looks a little generic, especially the Sierra Mist can. I like the misty concept, but it looks like what Target's store brand for lemon-lime soda might look like. Also, it's just a matter of time before garish promotional star bursts and the like are slapped all over the labels. Look up the Fanta redesign for proof of that.

Entry Divider

matt's comment is:

LOL@about perfect on a smooth glass bottle. what a joke. hahahaha.

after seeing the can designs, i believe this is a prank, pepsi can't be this stupid. sierra mist can design with a tree/forest behind it, impossible. there is no thought behind it, can't be real until i touch one at the store and say 'my god, what a shame.'

Entry Divider

matt's comment is:

type 101=text should read down?

text reading down goes to hell, just like text reading up goes to heaven. that is the type 101 i learned.

Entry Divider

Jonathan's comment is:

OK, I'm not minding the simplicity of these Pepsi bottles and cans, EUnismo got it right, they would look much better with the regular pepsi logo instead.

MTNDEW - while I'm liking the short hand idea, this logo is a typographical nightmare! Please tell me its just a really rough idea!

Sierra mist can - You better be kidding me! This looks like a middle school art project. If they seriously produce this, I promise, I will never drink their stuff again!

Entry Divider

Stephen's comment is:

Okay... I wasn't sure yesterday, but now since the can images have been posted, I'm nearly positive this is a fake... there's no way they'd possibly go with that Sierra Mist can- no way. The logo change I'll buy, but this can/bottle redesign has gotta be bogus.

Entry Divider

justen's comment is:

These resemble cans in the generic section or designs from a student portfolio. Very poorly executed, and what is up with the dead tree on the Sierra Mist can?

Entry Divider

Emily Charette's comment is:

I like the Sierra Mist can, it feels really fresh and I want to drink it. It's the perfect product for a rebrand because they don't have any equity in the first place. A huge leap forward for that brand.

But, I can't figure a responsible reason to throw out such a timeless icon as the Pepsi wave. It's really such a nice mark, they've got tons of investment in it. It wasn't broken, why have they tried to fix it?

Entry Divider

rickyaustin's comment is:

Not to be outdone, Coca-Cola will melt their iconic mark in 2009!

Entry Divider

johncorporation's comment is:

The only thing I actually like in the whole shebang is the "e" in pepsi being the old logo. Everything else is rubbish; unbalanced, top heavy, awful bottle design.

Entry Divider

Mr Posen's comment is:

Deaner, that first comment made my day. :)

Entry Divider

kristin's comment is:

That Sierra Mist can... wow.
First they take Pepsi in glass bottles away from Prince Edward Island, now this. I loved you, Pepsi. ;_;

Entry Divider

Andrew Klein's comment is:

The Sierra Mist can makes me cry

Entry Divider

Paul Lloyd Johnson's comment is:

I'm really sorry but those new bottles remind me of foreskin.

Entry Divider

Merrick's comment is:

Why is the 0 cal/carb/sug centered under the icon of Max, but not Diet?

That Sierra Mist can is so poorly set, not to mention being far too literal and uninspired. Wow., so bad.

I can deal with Mountain Dew, but why the "n" Why not Mt. Dew?

And I don't see this grin/smile/smirk nonsense.

This looks like bad student mock-ups, and I wouldn't hire the kid.

Entry Divider

Jim's comment is:

Guess if I was really trying to unify brands here, I would make the "e" in Sierra into a Barney-Burp "e" like on the pepsi labels.

They all seem so surreal. I would hope these are still in the working phase, but I wouldn't put money on it.

Entry Divider

Jon Dascola's comment is:

So bad. What a rip-off of the badass Turner Duckwork Coke rebrand.

BJN's comment is:

Here's the Pepsico logo, I apologize for the pain:

Entry Divider

Khris's comment is:

Ugh. Aside from ugly, they look worse than generic.

Entry Divider

Gene's comment is:

Every time I look at this I have to wonder: is this a publicity stunt for some sci-fi comedy set in the future? Is this Pepsi 2200 AD? Are they gonna sell Pepsi Perfect like in "Back to the Future II"?
It just looks like a poorly conceived "vision of the future" of the sort that tells us we'll have Black & Decker home hydrators for pizza and voice-activated front door locks from AT&T. And fax machines in every room.

Entry Divider

Antonio Serrano's comment is:

They're horrible!

The sierra Mist looks like green water with algae or roots inside. EEW!

I HATE the "Mtn" thing; what's wrong with Mountain? It must be to speak to these young hipsters, you know, the "lol" "wkd" "sk8" people…

And WHY lose the previous logo and design the new "e" to bring it back??!! RUBBISH!

I must say I do like the overall look of the can though. But not the font used.

This just drives me further away from Pepsi. Must be getting old…

Entry Divider

Clifton Alexander's comment is:

I don't know what all the complaining is about. It's ultimately about shelf space right, and creating a distinguishable brand on the shelf when it's next to it's competitors. No matter what we as designers think about the details of the design and typography, these bottles and cans will stand out on the shelf. In the near future anyway! Only time will tell how strong the new brand actually becomes.

Entry Divider

TJ's comment is:

wow... these are BAD logos!

Entry Divider

Ronlewhorn's comment is:

They should shorten Mtn Dew even further and just call it DEW. Everyone refers to it as such anyways.
I still think the "e" is cringing at the sight of the new Icon.

Entry Divider

aj's comment is:

eh, i'm indifferent to the new bottle look. unless they updated their manufacturing process in making the bottles cheaper to make i don't see why they even attempted a redesign of the bottles.

now, if they made the bottles more environmentally friendly i'd care a lot more about it.

Entry Divider

El Jefe's comment is:

These are all poorly-executed and lacking in imagination. The Sierra Mist is especially bad, the heavy-handed rendering of the obviously literal seems like a college-level exploration. I think with some proper work it could be a nice execution but this is just amateurish.

And to those who claim to like the MTN DEW, do you really, or at you just drawn to it here as it's surrounded by sub-par work. Within this bunch I'll agree it's the first loser, but, at the end of the day it's still pretty ho-hum.

Entry Divider

NAME DROPPER's comment is:

Arnell Group did the stuff.

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

I've just had a perfect idea, scrap the smile altogether, replace it with the wavy "e" on top and put the name of it on the bottom, it would look much better.

Mist can looks out of focus.

Entry Divider

Dale's comment is:

I am officially a coca-cola person now.

Entry Divider

David's comment is:

I think the Sierra Mist is probably the best concept, but it has a ways to go with its execution. Actually the cans are pretty smart overall (as long as the can opens so when you drink it the text goes right-side-up), but I just don't get how these aren't proof-of-concepts. I mean really, is that just a default gaussian blur on "mist?" You could at least make it interesting and have it play a bit with the colors underneath. And the kerning on "sierra" is awful.

The green and red on the Mountain Dew just feel way off in terms of contrast. Yeah, the green feels kind of piney but Mountain Dew is far (FAR) from a piney drink. They got the red right, and the design is there, but the colors are way too subdued for the "extreme" reputation the drink has.

I don't even want to talk about the "O carb cal sug" thing or anything else on the bottles. It's smart, but it's design masturbation, not good corporate branding.

Entry Divider

Wally's comment is:

The new 20 ounce bottle looks like a winkled penis.

Entry Divider

wally's comment is:

wrinkled penis...

Entry Divider

damon's comment is:

haha sure thing mate.

I have a bad habit of being sort of crass. I'll class it up for you.

Entry Divider

ArnoldP's comment is:

"We can't have a female figure, sooo, let's make our bottles look like a penis, and lets put some wrinkles in it. That is gonna look awesome with our sexy new flirty logo."

Entry Divider

Michael's comment is:

This IS a spoof. Brand New is testing reader response to reverse 3D-ifying of brands. See -- Pepsi bug was 3D - globular and gradated in its most recent state, which everyone always bitches about (AT&T UPS, etc.). Now we're seeing these straight vector Pepsi marks, like something a student would do for a Paul Rand homage assignment (S. Mist excluded, but that's just a Halloween prank with the Blair Witch trees, etc.). Now, we're freaking out because we miss our sexy 3d pepsi dripping drinkable logos and don't even get that it's all a prank to shine a light on our despair -- and thereby point out our narrow minded bend toward smashing the 3d identity systems we've unknowingly become addicted to.

Bravo. Nicely done, BN.

Sierra Mist can. Good Call

Entry Divider

Kirstie's comment is:

Wow, Pepsi really messed up on this.

I don't mind the Mtn Dew logo, even though it is not as good as the current logo. Sierra Mist logo reminds me of "swamp thing"

The Pepsi logos are downright awful. The logos look like they are from the 70s. Something like this would work for Coke, but not Pepsi!

Why is diet Pepsi silver? This reminds me of Diet Coke. The light blue was far better than the silver. I agree with everyone else, it is too minimalistic looking for todays standards.

Hopefully these are prototypes and not the actual logos. This will not increase sales.

Entry Divider

Tom Hackett's comment is:

They should have gone with a pirate theme

...then y'all would be singing their praises.
Seriously, it's not that horrendous.

Entry Divider

Jeff A.'s comment is:

Yeah, I'm with those that are staring at this in jaw-dropping utter disbelief. I don't believe these are real. They're just too horrible.

Entry Divider

Gabe Ruane's comment is:

Too many posts for me to have read them all, but considering how little we know about where these came from, wouldn't you all agree that that these are comps only?

You all are reviewing like they're final designs, set to hit the shelves. This is all photoshop-hacked together, which says rough mockups to me. Obviously Pepsi wouldn't use these images as part of the rebranding launch (god I hope not), so maybe a bit of restraint is in order this early on...

The new mark and typeface seem like fair game, but even that's speculative. Do we KNOW these are final?

Entry Divider

Emily's comment is:

Hmm.. yea I like the new fonts but the different variations of logos, just looks like a sick version of the original. And I enjoy that the background on the Mt. Dew Bottle had an organic feel to it of Mountains and "dew" when in reality Mt. Dew is ANYTHING but organic...But I say keep the old Pepsi Logo but change the rest!

mike's comment is:

When I saw the logos alone, my first thought was that it's a great idea, but poor execution. After seeing the logos on the bottles, I'm warming up to the idea.

I've always been a big fan of logos that aren't static. As motion becomes more and more integrated into everything, the next step in the evolution of an identity is fluidity.

I'm not the biggest fan of the typography (most hate the 'e', but I like the squiggle line. it pays a little homage to the previous logo), but the average consumer isn't as picky as we are!

I like that they are following Coke and stripping the bottles/cans to the most fundamental elements. I'm loving the Sierra Mist and Mtn Dew bottles/cans.

Overall, this is a step in the right direction in my opinion.

i really dont like the wrinkly bottles, but i LOVE the sierra mist can. i think its lovely and definitely stands out in the crowd and will stand out on the shelf.

im mixed on these other logos. i actually like them and i even like the cans ok, but i feel like the type and the logo on the cans could be a little more integrated. the proportions are not jussst right. i appreciate the space on the labels and cans, but in this case, they feel a bit awkward to me. the mtn dew design feels mediocre just because it is not nearly and dynamic as mountain dew should be. it feels abnormally unenergetic. very flat and dull. it reminds me of a student project and needs some more revisions. it could get there.

this isnt horrible work. the wrinkly bottles are not pleasing, but the other designs are ok. its a nice attempt to reduce the designs that are now garish and gaudy.

i feel bad for the designers that are getting ripped apart here with such vicious words! it almost makes me embarrassed to be a designer. it would be nice to see more constructive criticism.

Gil's comment is:

All of these designs are terrible in my opinion. It looks like they're trying to jump on the 'Keep It Simple, Stupid' bandwagon that seems to be gaining momentum as the economy gets worse.

Unfortunately I think they went the wrong way when it came to the logo changes.. it looks like they are the result of an inside joke, and unless you're part of a priviledged few you don't know the punchline.

On the bottles, the extra 'ribbing' just adds to the impression that someone wasn't paying attention to the overall goal of the redesign and tried to add extra flair with no real purpose or integration into the design as a whole.

Beyond all that, the Sierra Mist design is making me physically ill. My eyesight is bad to begin with, so looking at that can and seeing small clearly focused text positioned so close to large blurry text gives me a headache and a touch of vertigo.

I'm no marketing or design expert but I'm fairly sure the rules of successful product design do not include "Insult, confuse, and sicken your target audience". At least not for mass consumer products.. if these are meant to be 'haute couture' pieces then perhaps they nailed it perfectly.

Penis was my first thought with these bottles, and I thought it was just me. Also "swamp mist" for the sierra can... are you serious?

I'd like to say that really truly anyone who thinks this is good design or an improvement doesn't deserve to be commenting on design at all. Would anyone have known these new marks were suppose to be representing "smiles" if a press release didn't shove it in your face? I think not. Was it even done well? No.

I've worked for some of the biggest names in the business, still do - and the only way I can level with this work, is the "gun-to-head" scenario. Someone in marketing, or upper level management of Pepsi thinks they are a designer. Thinks they know what's what - and the Arnell Group has their hands tied. They want to see a 9-figure payout so they're doing what they're told, ruining their reputation in the process. Also they are posting for brand and package designers on Coroflot, which I found especially entertaining.

If this isn't the case, then I hope it's fake like some of you are claiming - because if I was willingly directing this project and coming up with this poor excuse for a redesign I'd shoot myself.

I know Pepsi is poor, but when you redesign your whole brand you usually give the same job to at lease 3 different firms and then choose the one you think is most capable of the work. If this was best someone came up with, I'd really hate the see the worst.

I must say that I have never really liked the pepsi packaging, it always seemed so messy and overwrought (at least what I have seen here in Australia), so on the one hand I quite like the pared back simplicity of the new labels (VERY derivative of Coke's new direction - but we can expect that from a brand that seems happy to be second in the category) - and the new typography that echos the circular forms of the pepsi mark is a nice touch - much better than the terrible disjointed mark/logotype mix they have had in the past in my opinion. Anyway the one thing that always won out for me was the Mark - no matter how clunky or messy their packaging was the mark still shone, and now they have bastardised the one thing I thought they had going for them and replaced it with these 'smiles'. Oh well.

I am not even gonna mention the bottles.

The minimalist design is a refreshing change but with the current logo it just feels very awkward.

The logo's across the separate cans look like a mistake, not to mention it just looks bad compared to the old school pepsi. I do like the strong blue they got on the can and type face itself doesn't bother me. It's just very weakly placed and executed. There's no excitement to this new look. Mainly it looks generic. The bottles are just badly executed with the exception of the Dew which just looks old school. Nothing new here. Bad executive decision, but then, when do they ever do anything right when it comes to what's cool and refreshing? Typical.

Matt's comment is:

I personally like these new designs over the current can/bottle designs.
Theyre a bit different in australia to the usa, but I find the current ones are too cluttered and are a bit try hard with all the different graphics slapped onto it.
Also the bottles look the same as the current ones. Its just the new ones don't have a pepsi globe, prince albert on them now.
I do worry that the smiles are bordering more into a campaign gimmick than a logo, but we'll see how it turns out after they release it.
Anyway, I think people are still going to grab that can or bottle of pepsi/coke no matter what the packaging looks like.
Maybe its just late, but even the 'e' reminds me of an emoticon or something smiling... Yeah I need sleep.

Peter Morris's comment is:

Really, what more can I say about this?

I think the "e" in pepsi is fantastic. I love how it emulates the old logo. However, that beauty is completely lost with the new logos. I could really get behind this if the design was even simpler. Put the logo on one side alone, and just the word pepsi on the other. They really don't feel like they've been designed to work together, so why force it?

And the MTN Dew...say it out loud "Empty in Dew." I agree with the folks that say Mt. would have been better.

I have no constructive criticism for the swamp MIST.

I think Mountain Dew and Pepsi has always suffered from bad design. I guess this isn't uncommon for them. However, I'm not afraid of change, and some of these ideas, if handled with a little more finesse, could be great.

What a beautiful, iconic logo for Pepsi-cola, simply gorgeous type, and a perfect departure point for an updated rendering…I just don't *get* why Pepsi felt the need to mess with a nice, simple, swooshy circle logo. It just confuses people. I don't mind the changed typeface, I rather think that works… I think the designer in this case turned the type ninety degrees, 'cause when you drink from a can/bottle, the type is more readily readable, as you're tilting the can/bottle upwards to drink. Perhaps a too-clever conceit, and certainly not original, but not heinous. I agree with the fifty million above posters who like the sierra mist can, it's really quite lovely to look at. I don't drink pop at all, but it almost makes me want to drink it. Almost.

I also heard something more recently that I'm thinking of in this case "good design is not about what you put in, it's about what you leave out." Sadly, it feels as if this re-design has left out all the pepsi in pepsi-cola.

What's with the third blue – navy?
It seems that Pepsi has attempted to include Sierra Mist into the Pepsi family with similar typography/placement. Why align these two products? A consumer doesn't care that Pepsi owns both.

Anyway, the two logotypes are not quite in the same font and Sierra looks like it's been typeset in PowerPoint! The kerning of the r and a is just not cool and that negative space is unforgivable. As a designer I would at that point realise that setting it in lowercase, and definitely that typeface, is a bad idea. The can is monotone making it look like an own-brand product.
It's a dreadful can. Maybe the poor taste demographic will like it.

On the Pepsi symbol I kind of like aesthetically it but no way is it a smile. Asking consumers to buy into this is just going to annoy people. Subtlety rarely works in FMCG packaging.

Apart from my aesthetic appreciation of the logo, I don't think it makes strategic sense. Apart from colour, all invested equity in the previous trademark is lost. Stripping away the 3D elements and changing the look at the same time is asking consumers to take a huge leap and is therefore massively polarising. Why would Pepsi want to polarise its customer base and change a winning formula. They came out on top for a while when Coca-Cola alienated its customer base by replacing Coke with New Coke in the 80s. Did they not learn this valuable lesson?

Coke simplified their cans not too long ago to massive praise, making the 3D look of Pepsi look outdated. I think that a more sensible response would be to take the Apple approach and ditch the type, using only their very famous symbol on a black or white background.

That's my contribution.

PS. I just made those retro blue red and white cans my new desktop because they look great.

This is exactly what you get when advertising agencies design brands, instead of branding firms. I've seen this happen so many times in the past 2 or 3 years. Ad agencies are trying to spread their wings because ad dollars are being cut. They have the ears of the brand managers, marketing directors and GM's, telling them that they can holistically design for every consumer touchpoint. Well, the ad agencies have consistently proven they can't compete with the great branding firms out there.

They know nothing about brand architecture, versioning, trends in packaging, industrial design, and what "hunts" for consumers on shelf. They don't think, they product shit, just like this.

Thanks, Peter Arnell from the Arnell Group who's firm redesigned this piece of shit student work, for treading on ground you have no right to be on. You are a failure, so go back to advertising.

I'm happy for the last guy who posted...NOT!

Just cause you work for Pepsi doesn't mean you need to agree with the logo change.

Come on, Pepsi needs to reconnect with its roots and promote itself as a heritage brand!

Changing the logo and brand identity everytime Pepsi starts to slip to Coke is not the response...obviously the brand manager want's the change cause he/she will reep the credit when it's a success.

And it will be successful because Pepsi will probably have 2-5 superbowl spots and other AWARNESS campaigns...but they also risk alienating consumers. I'm a lifelong Mountain Dew drinker and the new design doesn't work for me!

Why do people hail Turner Duckworth for their Coke brand refresh? I mean, sure, it looks awesome, but all they did was to grab the original flat Coke logo and whack it onto the product! I mean hello was anybody truely awake or sober when they made this. What idiots just goes to show y Coke is so much better and how much pepsi sucks dick. I love the trend away from the busy random mess in the background of the can. I just saw it in the store on the shelf and they catch your eye nicely. With all the cluttered mess on a store shelf they really pop out. I think it's a good idea to become more simplistic. Then again, I love minimalism and negative space.

As far as the logo itself, I neither love or hate it. I think they could have just kept the old one with the new "clean" look and achieved the same objective.

Also, this has almost nothing to do with the New Coke debacle everyone is referencing. The main issue with New Coke was the actual Coke on the inside. NOT the logo.

I think most of you guys are just upset that a simplistic design that wouldn't take much "work" was chosen over something more intricate. When in reality that's what most great logos are like. They can be drawn by anyone. That's what makes them recognizable and lasting.

Entry Divider

Mrs. M's comment is:

Pepsi:sticks out but I'm not impressed, sorta boring, basically the logo and the word "Pepsi" titled on it's side repeated 3 times on the bottle and the nutrition facts on the back. I feel disappointed.

Diet Pepsi: same exact thing as Pepsi, ecept the logo simle is smaller, has a small light brown circle around it, and it's on a white background with additional brown type that says "O grams of sug" or something like that.

Pepsi max: wasn't there

diet Sierra Mist: this one was nice yellow type,"diet" was non-bold while "sierra" is in bold and Mist was below, large and fuzzy, but still readable, all vertical in front of a green misty mountain vista which stretched across thew bottle. This was surprisingly better than I expected.

Tropicana:good god this was horrible more in person it DOES look like a cheap store brand,WORSE than the concept.

Sprite: they have new bottles out that only has the new typeface on a Christmas tree background, they also have a silver version (which I saw at Walgreens)diet Sprite/Sprite Zero that also has this, looks like they're dumping the S symbol.

Gatorade:Very nice, better than the other bottle designs, interestingly the bottles are smaller in person than I thought they would be, maybe the big version hasn't come out yet.

Coca Cola: still looks great as ever, even the Christmas version with Santa and the polar bears beats out the new Pepsi design, probably since it stretches across the bottle, instead of repeating.

I miss the old logo iut had more balance, than this tipsy looking thing, the logo now looks like someones tipping a bottle and drinking it to me.

went to the store today and saw pepsi had a new logo so i bought it like i usually do, drank it, and what do you know, IT STILL TASTES THE FUCKING SAME. jesus christ, i dont know how i ended up on this site, but it seems like the world is ending because pepsi changed the logo. wow. get laid.

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

Wow, Brandon you don't care how a company looks do you?

You do realize that this is the same logo they'll use on their trucks, website, cartons, everything (hurl),hell you'd probably drink the stuff if it had no logo.

Give me a break, you're pretty apathetic.

So you learned to use the internet, and how to leave a rude comment, wow good for you.

*rolls eyes*

If you don't care what it looks like, then why bother posting here?

You do realize pretty much everything you posted is seen by everybody now don't you?

Entry Divider

BrandonsMom's comment is:

I agree with Mark as Brandon takes apathy to a whole other level. As for the logos, I really like the new design. I can't wait to pick some up at the store :)

Entry Divider

Brandon's comment is:

I don't care if anybody sees it, thats why I posted. I have known how to use the internet, and I usually don't use it to write "rude" comments, and yes your right, I would drink it if it had no logo. I'm still going to drink Mountain Dew, I would still smoke Marlboro Menthol Lights if they switched logos, I still love the Washington Capitals after the shitty logos they went through. The only time I would bitch about a logo would be if the fire trucks I ride on everyday switched to yellow. Other than that, It's still the same.

Entry Divider

Brandon's comment is:

I just can't believe that people would switch to Coke or SunDrop or Mellow Yellow, or Sprite because a logo changed, etc. because a logo changed. Way to support a company

Entry Divider

Pam's comment is:

What are they thinking? What was a perfectly good logo now looks like it's sagging right out of itself. What's worse is the logotype. That typeface is straight out of the seventies. Get rid of it!

Entry Divider

Luke's comment is:

3 things I don't like about the new stuff
1. Pepsi logo looks fake
2. "txt" talk Mountain Dew
3. The word Mist in Sierra Mist

Change the Pepsi logo to original, Support vowels and spell out Mountain Dew, and make the Mist in Sierra Mist actually readable and then everything is great.

hmm, I understand the company wanting a new look, but those are not the best that feel off the turnip truck by far - IMHO

Two options come to mind -

1. Make a web design contest for a the new soda logos.

OR -

2. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I wonder how many late hours were spent on those designs ? And just who approved them?

Snoozebar's comment is:

Here's how to tell your new product logo is a failure:

I am neither a graphic artist, nor an expert on branding or logos, nor in the marketing field. I'm just a guy who sometimes buys and drinks Pepsi.

I never really notice changes in design on products I buy. Actually, it seems to me as if they change quite a bit (all of a sudden, there was this Pepsi Max thing or Coke Zero or whatever... who cares). I only buy cola with no sugar or calories, and don't have a clue why there are both "DIET" and "MAX" and don't care.

Now, here I am, this guy who cares not.

But when I first saw the new Pepsi bottles at the store last night, I stopped and made a "huh?!" face.

Then, I -- this person who NEVER has done something like this -- actually took the effort to get online and look up what this new logo stuff is about.

Then I took the effort to read this blog's user comments.

Then I took the effort to write a comment of my own.

I think the new logos suck. And it's bothering me.

This should tell you that the new branding FAILS.

Entry Divider

Pigumon's comment is:

REALLY BAD.

What is wrong with Pepsi?? They have a classic Icon, and go and change it on the whim of some lousy graphic designer.

This is like Apple or McDonalds changing their logos.

Plus the text looks like 1978.

Entry Divider

Pedobear's comment is:

Looks good, not as good as loli's though.

Entry Divider

Noah's comment is:

Someone earlier mentioned Old Spice and that is interesting because the curves on the new mark definitely make me think nautical or airline...
It is very easy to be critical, however, this attempt can't even be considered a brand refresh! It's a complete rebranding.. Modernize the package for sure, but why mess with an iconic mark??

Cait's comment is:

I love the new logo and font...it's chic and it actually made me buy pepsi this afternoon and I'm not even a soda drinker!

I think that the look and feel of the new logo is similar to that of Ethos water or SmartWater.

Also, my bottle has the shape of the old bottole, not the one showed on display here.

Entry Divider

Chris's comment is:

It's crazy to change an icon like that. I like the simplicity, and I like the overall design, the less, med, more thing is cool, but to mess with the icon...

also Sierra Mist looks really lame, but it's also the worst tasting Lemon/Lime soda ever.

Good to hear they trashed the "wrinkled phallus" style bottle idea.

Here's my attempt, I think it might be better with just a HUGE logo and no text.

Did anyone notice they dumped the forever lame ® or ™ that's on EVERY trademark or logo?? That's pretty cool from a design standpoint.

Entry Divider

Justin Hill's comment is:

I like the new logo. I wonder if they'll give the roller coaster, the Pepsi Orange Streak at Nickelodeon Universe inside the Mall of America, to this look? It would be cool if they did, because the Mall of America's official soft drink is Pepsi. The new look screams "web 2.0," yet it looks very "iCarly" to me. The "Mtn Dew" revision also looks cool with an excellent use of the Serpentine Oblique font, as well as a jagged mountain background.

Entry Divider

Cait's comment is:

The new logo is AWESOME...and to the person who compared the changing of a logo to Obama's "change" campaign, I'm sorry but that is a far stretched comparison. It's not so much of a change as it is an upgrade! We all have different opinions/perspectives but let's try not relate a pepsi can design to the future president of the United States.

this update is for the worst!

i hate to be too critical, but for a company as big as pepsi i'm going ahead: this logo wasn't designed by a real designer. looks like the work of some high school kid with access to some fonts.

look at those curves, they don't complement each other. look at the shape in between the curve. i'm sorry but this is shit! pepsi needs to hire a real designer. the moment you go cheap on your design dept, you pretty much seal the fate of your company.

if you don't want to pay that much, you can at least hire a college student from a real design school. this is embarrassing. i've always preferred pepsi over coke, but i think it's time that i switch.

1. I think the new logo looks pretty sharp. The new cans are very clean looking. I've got a 12 pack in the fridge right now, and I do say, they look much nicer than the shitty rotating designs they've had the past whiles.
2. The new logo isn't all that different than the old one. The can design is, but the "big ball" design has been around for ages and ages.
3. The bottle does not look like a penis. At all. If you think the bottle looks like a penis, I feel obligated to tell you that there's something wrong with your penis. I also don't see what's so great about the Mtn Dew bottle. It's pretty average looking.

Entry Divider

bunjamina's comment is:

Love it or hate it, it has certainly gotten a lot of attention which is always good for business. I was shopping yesterday and I saw the new packaging for the first time and guess what, I bought a 12 pack of pepsi just because the new image caught my attention.

I am a graphic designer and I love the old logo, but I think the new packaging was a good move.

Still not as good as what Hatch did for coke though...

Entry Divider

Anonymous's comment is:

I loathe the new typeface; it actually makes me angry, it's so ugly and misused. It's just plain wrong for their brand. It's retro (dated and cliche) and effete to the point of absurdity. And the bizarrely skewed set of new logos is just wrongheaded. These look like some kind of product design satire. I'm not sure if it's possible to destroy your brand with awful graphic design, but we shall see.

BTW, Chris, your design is 1000x better and it does everything they were trying to do without destroying their brand identity or using a font that makes me want to puke. Good job.

It's the "Let's change everything" school of thought, executed poorly, as required. The logo looks like some crap variation they would have passed on the way to the classic logo. It has nothing inevitable about it. It's different for the sake of being different. Fire that graphic designer.

Entry Divider

Justin Hill's comment is:

It's proof that it's not what's on the outside, but what's on the inside that counts. I love Pepsi, and always will, even if they make such a radical change to the logo.

Entry Divider

Tony M.'s comment is:

It would be a good mark if Pepsi were an Airline, but they are not.

The mark itself is modern, which is fine, but think of this going on their stationary package, including business cards...
if you remember your basics from design school the mark should never have it's white space begin to disappear or disappear completely when used on a business card, as this would be it's smallest application on printed material.

The typography is just bad, it looks very amateur, not to mention they broke a cardinal rule of the balance between the type and the mark in a combo mark; that rule being "keep the type simple" so as to create hierarchy for the mark, which is going to receive way more exposure to the human mind. But to be brief, the type is bad, looks like it was pulled of the CD it came on... except for that bad emulation on the "e" of the curve on the mark.

Let's not even go into how off balance the counter of the "e" is on this "Chalet" type font.

I don't know what inexperienced or ill trained creatives they hired for this, but it is only the most recent in a series of mistakes by big companies to "modernize" the brand... mistakes made by companies such as AT&T where a badly drawn mark is juxtaposed with laughable type. Especially in AT&T's case.

Entry Divider

It's bad, they should have done the older 60's can and call it a day.But the true ? is what the h*ll is up with this 8 pack/18 pack just bring back what people want, good old 12 pack/24 pack.

Entry Divider

roy's comment is:

i think context is important here. if you see the new look on the shelf with all the other soda labels near it, the brand really stands out. Lately when i walk down the soda isle its just an assault of decorative elements and all the brightest colors in the visible spectrum, but the pepsi branding is so clean and easy going.

i think this new look will also help pepsi max out a bit. on the shelves, people will see that pepsi max has the biggest grin and some people will associate that with being the best version of pepsi, and they'll at least try it. a new look doesnt make it taste good, but it might sell a few more gallons of sugar/caffeine water.

The new logo looks great, sure the smilely face is retarded and sure it'd look better if they kept the old ball, but I'm sure they'll change it soon anyways. They just got through changing it, and now they've done it again. And once they hear everyone hates the new retarded smile on the ball, they'll change it back.

Until then, let us enjoy pepsi. It still tastes great, no matter what stupid paper it has on it.

I have never felt worse about a rebranding... and this is most certainly a feeling. I feel devastated. I feel alienated. I feel like Davidge in Enemy Mine when he finds the Drac corpses and Pepsi can, except the can design in the movie was a million times better than this.

And for everyone that thinks this is an improvement in the trajectory of simplification, I point to the 70's through 80's versions and rest my case. I actually hunted for vintage T-shirt from that era because the design is so perfect. (Never found an authentic one.)

erik's comment is:

I work for pepsi bottling group. The new bottle and casing will look awesome when put in coolers and shelfing. The logos are meant to represent smiles. The biggest being diet pepsi max. The carb cal sugar thing with the zero above it is for the zero carbs, zero calories and zero sugar in diet pepsi. I know they look stupid on screen, but look for them in stores and then judge, also: I have had a lot of customers not recognize the new casing, so it's not subtile? It's drastic, it's new, and look at a coke shelf at a store. It's color coordinated for all the idiots

Entry Divider

Jacob's comment is:

i dunno what the big deal is, i think theyre pretty cool.

The type isn't exactly "classic" but pepsi was never really trying to be so much as coca cola. It's cool how they made a subtle avatar out of the logo for diet and max, without making it 3D or some lame character or whatever.

Yea the ripples on the bottle are kind of lame though.....with such a clean simple design I dont see why they didn't do the same for the bottles, maybe this is the standard shape to fit in vending machines?

Thats a challenge.

I love the new branding.

It's clean, simple, and completely sets the Pepsi brand apart from their competitors. The bottles I do not care for - but that's a very easy fix of which I'm sure Pepsi Co. will tend to by summer '09.

That so many on here loathe the new design makes me wonder if this forum is made up primarily of students. At least that is how the comments are coming across.

I've reviewed these designs with other ADs and CDs, like myself - all of us with at least 10 years in the business, and I've yet to hear negativity toward the actual branding. The bottles are mostly crap to everyone, but by and large this is good branding on the part of Pepsi Co.

julie's comment is:

Why on earth would a person, company or president of a number one company change something that has worked? NO i'm not a student, I've been in advertising/printing industry for 20 years. (Mist just gives me a headache looking at the huge blur.)

So Pepsi spends huge amounts of dollars to change something; why? Think of the monies that went out to hire the ad agency, the hours they charged Pepsi for the concept, layout and design and total remakeover. (What....were the excutives at Pepsi BORED one day???? Why not change the color schemes also then?)... , The plate changes, the cost to actually change machinery to print new labels, the cost for all new corporate stationary, the new "everything"... jee, I wonder how much this will cost the consumers? AND for something that the concsumers could really care less about, or rather very strongly against the new logos... as seen here on this blog.

Isnt' it the TASTE? Isn't that what sold Pepsi? Isn't that what STILL sells Pepsi?? ya think? GOD FORBID you start changing the recipe like coke did!!! Oh, ha! maybe you will next year...

Just proves that the people in charge, aquired their jobs only on their looks, and not on their brains. Whose doing the real work? Isn't the CEO;'s. In this time of economic depression, no good CEO, or President, or VP would allow Pepsi to spend millions, on changing their logo..... (good call!!! ) May I suggest dropping a dollar or two on a 12 pack..( now that would bring in sales!!!) rather than giving $ to overpaid ad agencies that talk Pepsi executives into understanding ridiculous ways of how to ruin a good thing AND spend millions at the same time? If Pepsi has THAT MUCH $ to spare, give it back to the people who really care; the people that buy your product; not some high paid advertiser that just wants to use Pepsi and Pepsi's money for their own vacation or pent house.

The only soda I drink is Pepsi, not any more! I just lost all faith.

This person that convinced Pepsi to change over did a great but stupid sell. She/he should be a lawyer, not an advertiser. Who thought of this stupid stuff? Why mess with it?

Entry Divider

dan's comment is:

Hi Keith,

To elaborate on my point, per your request:

The bottles, meaning structure, are very much disposable and temporary in terms of the brand hierarchy. Structures are evolved, redrawn, and remanufactured all the time.

I think these plastic bottles look like something a structural engineer designed with no knowledge of the new branding's strategic goals.

I live/work in Cincinnati, home to P&G, and all the supporting services their brands need, including structural designers. Please believe me when I say that if you took bottles of Tide, Downey or Pantene from the past 5 years and put them side-by-side, you would notice significant differences in structure.

Also, to clarify: I meant to say that I really like the Pepsi and Mist stuff. The Mtn Dew is full of problems from an alignment and brand equity position, alone. With Mtn Dew, Pepsi Co. just made their product look generic.

I am a young but long time Pepsi drinker, at first I kind of liked the new design but the more I look at it the more I dislike it. I think a retro design would have looked much better by adapting one of their previous logos from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's or even the early 90's. Dont mess with the logo itself!!!! It has been the icon we Pepsi drinkers have grown up with and associate with. We the drinkers make Pepsi what it is, without us it's nothing. They should have given us multiple designs to look at and we the die hards vote to which one we liked the best, the way it should be. Here is a link to an article I found...

being an ad creative, and loving some of the work that BBDO does (given that BBDO had Pepsi since forever),

i hope Coke/Coca-Cola takes advantage of this and doesn't rebrand themselves as far as packaging goes, as a retaliation move, because this Pepsi rebranding design thing is one of the worst things to happen.

I don't know what to think of this badly altered Bauhaus face. And the "MTN DEW" breaks every typeface spacing for no good reason. 2009 is going to be a memorable year, for all the wrong reasons.

Here's a question: Why differentiate between logos? Why the "regular" sized white "smile" in the Pepsi Marble on regular Pepsi, why the smaller "smile" in the Pepsi Marble on Diet/0, and why the extra huge "smile" on the Pepsi Max? Shouldn't the main logo just be ONE (stupid) smile, because nobody wants to be thinking that they're drinking more or less/worse or better than someone else. The "smile" crap is smarmy anyway...that's more like an angled sneer.

I can't believe all of this horrible redesigning that PepsiCo has upchucked in the past year.

Entry Divider

Bob's comment is:

The new graphics are TERRIBLE. Pepsi logo included
Being in the Pepsi business for 24 yrs, I can't believe that Pepsi would spend the money to conduct a total Graphics change at this time.
Especially the Graphics they are changing to.
With the economy in such dire straights and most companies trying to figure ways to save money without raising the cost of their products to the consumer, SHAME ON PEPSI!
I know what kind of an investment must be made for a change of this magnitude.
The packaging change is just the tip of the iceburg. Trucks, point of sale, indoor and outdoor signage, the list goes on and on and it all cost money.
At a time when a business the size of Costco will print their monthly coupon book on a lesser quality paper to keep from being forced to raise prices to their members in tough times, Pepsi shoud be ashamed of themselves.
Most people don't relieze that Pepsico will dictate these changes, but the costs of most of these changes are mainly the responsibility of the individual Pepsi franchise to foot the bill.
I think Pepsi would have been better off taking the money they spent on the Graphics change and taking all of the top Pepsi executives on a long spa weekend. In the long run at least someone would get something out of it.
This graphics change wont last long.

I kind of like the new Pepsi logo, the other designs were a big mistake. But like Bob and others have said. Why do this when its going to cost so much to do?
Im more concerned with the prices though. If the prices keep going up(especially because of redisigns, I for one will no longer buy them. In fact, I haven't bought 20 oz bottled drinks or 12 oz can drinks from convenience stores in years because of the prices. Why should I when I can buy a 2 liter for under 1.50 from a grocery store or dollar store.

Its the right direction to spend millions of dollard overhauling designs, that includes bottle labels, cans, drink machines, signs, posters, and advertisements all across the world???

I dont see how. Why not lower the prices on the products sold. That might actually get people to buy it that normally dont. Not changeing a design.

Entry Divider

Jerry's comment is:

Oh and the idiot that said, there more noticable on the shelves or stand out more. Rick R's comment is:

I'm no designer, but I am a 40-something Pepsi/Diet Mountain Dew drinker in the media business. I was stunned by how bad the logos and packaging are. (I have only seen Pepsi/Diet/Max in person, not Mtn Dew.) Key complaints:
1. The 12-packs look like generic store brands
2. Why would you have three separate logos? Aren't they three different versions of Pepsi? Don't you hurt the core brand by bastardizing the logo?
3. The retro, lowercase font looks amateurish
4. The cal, carb, sug = 0 thing is ridiculous
5. Why is Max "smiling" the most?

I'll still pound my Diet Mountain Dews, but I can't think of a worse rebranding in recent memory.

The diet can is silver and lost on my grey desk.
Diet Can Silver does not stand out at all.

The thing is, I have been drinking Pepsi for 35 years. I won't change becuase I don't like the logo.
I am a Pepsi drinker.
I just have to 'grin, ah smile? and drink it' until they change the logo back.

For all of you who haven't gone to art school or know what REAL design looks like.....get lost. You have no clue. If you studied design and trends, you'd realize that Pepsi (along with the rest of the US) is behind the world when it comes to pushing the design envelope.

Besides, is a new logo going to get all of the ignorant haters to buy a can of Pepsi when all that's changed is the friggin' packaging? Doubtful. Keep drinking your Coke. Its called updating. How many of you criticizing the new logo have even been out of North America and have seen what the rest of the world is coming up with? Our design here is awful. (check out Japan and the UK)

Logos and advertising are what keep brands running strong. I commend Pepsi for updating its look and entering into a new competative marketplace.

I'm sorry, Pepsi, but I hate your new logo and label design. I agree with updating one's corporate identity to stay competetive in world where design is becoming more and more apparent in a company's identity, but why follow the fad set-forth by brands such as Ikea and Apple( I'm not knocking Apple's designs by any means)? The "Clean" look is "in" right now, but so were bell bottoms, followed by tapered jeans, then it was super baggy. Don't just become "another clean designed brand". Do something new and exciting. These logos are awful.

With one exception: The "E" in Pepsi has the subtle wave from the old logo, and I love it. That should have been the focus of this campaign, not some "Smiles" that NO ONE ELSE CAN SEE BUT YOU, PEPSI!

Kodie's comment is:

I waited until I saw these in my store where I buy soda by the 2 liter bottle, and it's hard to prefer these over the old design, currently still side by side on the shelf, but the old design's kind of ugly too in the way that it is. Partially of the mind that it doesn't matter that much, but I enjoyed that blue and red old pepsi can posted way above for a very nostalgic trip back in time. It has been a long time since that design, well how often does Pepsi change their package? They really don't care about "recognition" if they seem to be unable to settle on something, they are more concerned with always keeping with times, changing accordingly often. They are for the youth, and they try to appeal and stay in fashion. It's hardly a fault of theirs (with the unspoken part: if you outgrew their target demographic). The most irritating is the trend where capital letters no longer matter for proper nouns, but Pepsi is hardly breaking new ground there, plus the hipster-McTexty "Im 2 bzy 2 spl teh wrd 'mountain', so Im gt abbr cya" Pepsi can afford 5 more letters, but I guess it takes too long to read also.

I wanted to add that I don't really like the Sierra Mist can, I think the word 'mist' could be a little less blurry or "misty" if that's what it's supposed to impart. It's quite a fog covering, overly literal, it can afford to pull back a few notches. It's kind of scary. It's jungle-y, I could get disoriented and get trapped in quicksand, and snakes will eat my eyes. Vividly off-putting? I'm being dramatic, but that's what I don't like about it. Good thing I don't even like the beverage.

Also the pepsi smiles remind me of the many moods of the m&m characters:

Mark's comment is:

Does anybody think the Pepsi logo could have done better on a white background?,it seems it would fit there better, and I think it would've been a better idea, if they went with one Pepsi logo for all the cans instead of this variation of smilies, which looks way too amateurish. One would have been fine. I especially hate the Pepsi Max version, it looks poorly drawn.

The Mountain Dew can looks very similar to the way the Brisk can was redesigned.

It's one thing to tweak a logo to bring it up to date with current trends (I happen to think the old logo was timeless.. and that this doesn't resemble current trends).. but this is a sin. It's such a far stretch from the original, which was an American icon and instantly recognizable.
Why spend all those years building brand recognition if you're just going to do this? It seems to be counter-active.

I'd love to hear pepsi's explanation as to why they changed it, and to something so hideous.

Since WHEN has a president been a symbol?
I understand that you need a cool looking bumper-sticker to get supporters when you're campaigning, but the "Obama-O" really went too far. Its like, when Prince became know as a symbol.

@Eunismo - Exactly what I was thinking.

@Ice Goddess - Nice. My friend at work said the excact same thing when he saw it, and he's not even design oriented or anything.

@Matthew Moore - Hahaha (Mt. Dew bottle).

When I first saw the bottle, I thought, OK. Minimalism, cool font, what's with the logo? It it like a sailboat, or a wave? The minimal thing is OK, but please keep the original circle logo. You're really messing with your own brand recognition now. And I think that's the thing. Pepsi should just come up with something solid (or revert to one of their older solid brand identities) and keep if for more than 10 years. That'd do them wonders. Even bring back the ORIGINAL original Pepsi-Cola banner logo and hang the heck on to it.

A second thought is this - nobody actually buys Pepsi because of their branding. Nobody. They buy it because Pepsi has already made a deal with a retailer or merchant to use their products instead of Coke products (except in the case of supermarkets and minimarkets who sell both - then it's just a flashback to the 80's "Coke & Pepsi Wars" where you solidified your life-long commitment to one or the other by picking one when a friend asked you "Coke or Pepsi better?"). No real purchases are made from their branding - or even their taste, for that matter.

The pepsi cans are a bit fail. Not so bad as the Mist and the Dew, but I don't care for them. The logo creeps me out. CREEPS.

Sierra Mist DOES look like a generic brand! Looks like a high school photoshop project that deserves a B-. I thought it was a joke at first, but today at Walmart I saw 2-liter bottles of Sierra Mist like that and I pissed myself.

But then I found a 12 pack of Mountain Dew Voltage (finally arrived in my town) and went home happy.

I'm surprised no one else mentioned this (I control - "F" searched... no way I'm reading all these comments), but doesn't the white invoke some kind of dove imagery? Like the curving body/belly of a dove? Because drinking Pepsi will lift your spirits, not corrode your insides! Pepsi's got soul!

Joe Griffin's comment is:

I guess it looks like the typical body of a songbird tattoo - accordingly, the diet one is skinnier than the regular Pepsi. My thinking here is they want to tie something that is unhealthy, while "healthy" beverages like VitaminWater (totally bogus by the way) take over the market - and the dove is the symbol for purity. Anyone following me on this?

Here's some absurd words on AdAge of the creator of the new Pepsi logo about the Coke's "live positively" campaign that also uses a smile on its logo

Peter Arnell, architect of Pepsi's new logo, said of Coca-Cola's campaign: "It's a wonderful moment in the history of Pepsi, and Coke is following us.

"To see [Coke] come out with that is great, because it just means that they're following suit in what everybody should be doing now," he added. "We put a lot of pressure on the category by doing something different. We captured the zeitgeist."

Hey, isn't was Coca-Cola the one that came out first with the minimalist and retro designs on their packaging??? geez!

One more thing... that "live positively" logo appeared in Brazil way before Pepsi released its new logo... only in U.S.

Yorkali Walters's comment is:

I can see why so many people dislike the new Pepsi logo. Yes, I too quivered when I first saw it. Yup they are famous for constantly changing their branding and all that but a lot of the argument I think needs to go deeper. Pepsico knew this backlash would happen. They knew the new design would not bode well with a wide swath of their drinkers but they did it anyway. The real story here is the why they did it. Not What they did.

My thoughts on why they did it...
After taking a long hard look at the logo my guess for why they did it is this.

This logo was not designed for the NOW, it was designed for the future. Current context is not it's focus. This logo was designed for a future zeitgeist. A theme, a style, a mode of thinking...not yet popular. When a company of the size of Pepsico redesigns their branding as often as they do, they have come up with a design that is projected from their future to the now. it cannot be defined by not current tastes.

They do this not just for design longevity's sake, but also packaging purposes. If this new branding is to carry them through the next 10, 15 or 20 years it allows them to project packaging costs much better. For a company the size of Pepsico these projections can make or break their bottom line.

Think about it.

If they design a logo that is more concurrent with today's design language or thinking and it gets stale in 3 - 5 years, that is going to be millions of dollars lost for the company's that produce their packaging because it will represent a massive retooling for these guys. So for me, that is the why. The design will slowly grow on us and it will soon seem as ahead of it's time..... no I take that back. That's probably what the Pepsico board is betting on.

This new logo resembles Obama's logo. In union Station in DC, they have huge posters all over the place, joy with the o as the new logo, hope, and so on. all with just the logo on it. No where does it say pepsi. the day after the inaugeration, people were still in union station taking pictures of the pepsi signs, thinking they were there for obama. I saw them and overheard them. Why would you change a 100+yr old logo?????
The change is here! They are hoping to get people to buy pepsi because of the logo.

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

I still cannot see this supposed similarity between the Obama logo and the Pepsi one. The only way I see the Pepsi logo being CLOSE to the Obama logo is if you flip it upside down, even then one would look off, and that one would be the Pepsi one.

Regarding diet Sierra Mist - what were they thinking? The former bottle and design looked so refreshing - something you want to drink when you're thirsty. It could even make you thirsty to look at it. This design is so dark, who would want to drink it? It makes me think of mud. And the fuzzy "MIST" has me blinking to try to get the fuzz out of my eyes. Re-branding, particularly on a globally recognized brand, should be done cautiously and with much consideration. This seems to be done on a whim without much forethought. the new look for Dew is cool looking, however Pepsi is failing at the "keeping it simple" design that Coca-Cola adopted, but Coke made it look retro like an old school coke can with an updated look. however Pepsi screwed this up by changing their iconic logo with an "Obama" logo ripoff. but at least they didn't went with an bad logo like Dr. Pepper did when it reinvented it's look.

Rakel's comment is:

I really think that Pepsi should revisit the 1980's logo and update that a bit for this decade. The new logo just seems a little gimmicky, and as others have said, generic. The way the logo is aligned to the right of the text really kind of bothers me a bit. I'm not so into the typeface either. The Sierra Mist and "Mtn" Dew redesign is pretty awful too. It seems like they were trying to brand them somewhat similarly, but they really seem a bit of a hodge podge.

My inital take on the slimmer "smile" on the diet bottle/can was because when you "diet" you get "slimmer".

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

I DO!

it was a Pepsi wave, but I'm not sure what it symbolized to me it symbolized refreshment, and soda in a glass.

AT LEAST it was immediately recognizable. Heck, if you showed it to me without the name I COULD STILL TELL what the company the logo stood for. It also had BALANCE which is also a plus. To scrap that for a smiley thing is just a BAD decision.

But you're right this logo isn't going away soon and we'll had to get used to it.

Entry Divider

Jill F.'s comment is:

I saw these in the store the other day and almost laughed out loud. There's so much more Pepsi could've done with their logo that didn't involve changing it to the silly little smile logo that they decided upon. The Mountain Dew logo doesn't bother me quite as much, and I actually have to say that the Sierra Mist design is an improvement over their past logo, which looked rather like clip-art to me. But yeah, the new Pepsi logos, totally not doing it for me. It won't cause avid Pepsi drinkers to turn over to Coke, but it does make most non-Pepsi drinkers laugh a little at Pepsi's new design.

I love everything about the new design. The logo, the font, the bottles... Notice the difference in the white stripes between the regular/diet/max. Back when Pepsi was fully made with sugar and came in a glass bottle it tasted better and was much fizzier.

Coke has been terrible since 1985. I don't even know what their symbol looks like now.

Entry Divider

Adam's comment is:

First, you all need to grow up. Keep your comments professional, like the site was made to be. Comparing these bottles to a penis and vagina...really?

Secondly, I think Pepsi did a good job at creating a simple, classic design. They got rid of all the clutter, stripped down the Mountain Dew bottle and put it plain and simple. People are looking for clutter anymore, as a society we have been too exposed to clutter to give it a second look. I think they are trying to project the image of plain and simple, they don't need a flashy design to sell their product, the taste does it for them.

Entry Divider

Joy Adams's comment is:

I can go on an on and on about how such an ignorant choice diminishes equitable brand value. Not only on this front, but let's just look at it from an aesthetic POV. It's flat, shallow in it's capacity to expand as a brand architecture, and not to mention that its curvatures are a sloppy mess. Heads should be on a plate!!! SERVE THEM UP!

This is a classic case of some marketing and creative director moving up the ranks without a thorough understanding of their craft, or a "branding" company giving into the whims of the client without having a conscience and allowing the client to run of the cliff. Maybe it's just a great case of poor quality control from the hidden cubical of the "naive intern". I could never blame him or her on the front lines.... But for all of those generals who approved such a HORRID design to the possibility of public release, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!!

What a brand tragedy!

Entry Divider

clh579's comment is:

This is going to be a monstrous fail. In 3 years Pepsi will be scrambling to go back to something similar to the familiar. The new design looks as though it was thought up by a bunch of 22-year-old interns fresh out of some college marketing class.

As for "designed for the future"...yea, if we are in the year 1997 predicting what we think the year 2015 will look like. That font just screams "Late 90s perception of futuristic". As said above, the new logo itself doesn't convey a smile, it conveys a stroke!

I appreciate the return to simplicity (getting rid of the "busy-ness" of the packaging), but Coca-Cola came up with that idea first, not Pepsi.

I think the design community (or rather kids spat out of college with an "art" degree" or veteran designers that need a quick pay-check) need refrain from tampering with classic brands that already make them great. I think the tendency to renew or modernize certain brands calls for some self control and ego-discipline. Classic brands are classic because they work and are duly recognized by 80 year olds all the way 20 year olds. It probably would've been better to promote a campaign that works for these classic American brands rather than making them inferior with simplistic Arial type. On a heavier note--I think kids would've created better logos and brand designs with Microsoft Office.

Entry Divider

Bryan's comment is:

There are so many comments here. I stopped reading after about 100. But did anybody else noticed that the vertical placement of the word pepsi in relation to the circular logo kind of makes for an abstract letter "P", vaguely shaped as the main font's "p" . I wonder if that was planned. I bet it was. And if it was it seems very poorly executed. As if the person who hatched that idea knew that if they pointed it out right away, people would always see it when they knew what to look for.

Then there is the slight waviness of the cross-brace on the letter "e".

I think that maybe the ad people sold pepsi(who obviously wanted to get away from the macho & bold yet family-friendly nascar-ish image they have had for so long) on the thought of "minimalism and subtleties are cool".

All in all, I think the product just looks vacant. No balance and not very aesthetically eye-pleasing. Definitely doesn't make me thirsty!

Plus the logo itself instantly made me think of some evil serpent eye.

@kmedia - if you are switching from Pepsi to Coke and claiming coke is better because you simply don't like the logo Pepsi has now, then you are a tool and an idiot. adam's comment is:

why does everyone hate the new pepsi logos and redesign so much? am i missing something? did they spell the name wrong on the new cans or something? it looks and feels really similar to the old branding, except cleaner, more modern and, simply put, like an "evolution" of the brand.

it is easy to recognize the new pepsi look on the shelf . . . in fact, i think the new pepsi brand has a greater shelf presence than the previous versions. go to the store and check out all those stacked boxes of the "fridge-friendly" 12-packs and tell me it doesn't stand out from all of the other bright, over-done crap there.

oh, and that mtn dew can posted about 13 posts up is old, i have seen that one floating around in the ast year or two or so. definitely not newer than the stalagtite design.

Rob's comment is:

Most of us dislike it for a number of reasons, first changing a symbol that was recognized around the world for the past 50+ years. Im not knocking the base blue colour or the Pepsi font, I do like that much but it is so simple that it becomes bland, it lacks that "pop" factor, your right it does catch the eye but for the wrong reasons. The new logo/globe lacks symetry, it doesnt stand for anything anymore, a few sqigly drawn lines, that anyone could create. Most of all it lacks identity, the whole retarded smile concept is aimed at kids, no doubt about it, if Pepsi wants to be taken seriously and increase it sales it needs to "grow up". This is comming from a loyal life long Pepsi drinker, the new design won't stop me from drinking my favourite soda but it sure makes me cringe, I'm not knockin change, change is good and keeps things fresh but this is an example of failure, pure and simple, a 6th grader could have done a better job at designing a new logo.

My cousin and I raved over the new pepsi cans when we first saw them.

We still do, to an extent.

"Oh look at the color! It's prussian blue! That's awesome! And the logo is a lot better now, and i love the font, because it's so minimalistic."

Minimalistic. I like it.
Hate on it if you want, but there's nothing but love here.

Red, Los Angeles's comment is:

It looks like it belongs on the tail of an airplane.

Pepsi started in this incredibly charming little historical town called New Bern, NC (my parents live there now). They need to go back to their roots, which are pretty cool.

I agree with the guy who said this was a hijack by some Pepsi exec who thinks he's a designer (how hard can it be?) and twisted their arms throughout the process. I've worked with big clients like that who took beautiful work and sent it by their Old Uncle Ned over Thanksgiving..."And HE wanted to know why the label isn't GOLD FOIL?? ALL Champaign labels have GOLD FOIL!" They're paying...we're all headed into a Great Depression...whose going to argue with the guy writing the check right now?

Parsons grad here...also worked for huge studios for many years...what a mess and how sad this is.

Jensonb's comment is:

It took me a while, but I've decided what I do and don't like about this (Failure of a) rebrand.

First off, this is not Pepsi. I have no idea what made them think this represented their brand or product in any way, but it doesn't. Pepsi is supposed to be all "extreme" and exciting. This is...Arthouse faff.

The new Pepsi font is mediocre at best. I've seen worse, but it really doesn't suit Pepsi. I would have updated the 80s font.

But now we come to the crux of the matter: labeling, bottle design and arrangement. First off, those labels on the bottles are too big and they're far too plain for the area (Ditto the can design). They also don't seem like beverages...More like cleaning agents or chemicals.

The bottles are ugly and proportionally wrong. 500ml bottles do not and should not be in that format. It looks like a supermarket own-brand cola, or one of those kiddy drinks (Like Panda Pops over here in the UK). Never mind the abysmal shaping - a poor showing, especially in light of Coca-Cola's masterfully redesigned bottles.

But worst of all, is the arrangement. I hate that asymmetric crap on the cans and bottles. Hate hate hate it. I hate how i forms a stupid "p", I hate that it requires to writing to be vertical and I hate the lack of any kind of alignment.

I, unusually, am not too bothered by the new symbol though. The "smiles" concept and the fact it's different on each drink is silly, but the regular Pepsi one looks okay...On it's own. It would look better when shown with the name if Pepsi was simply centered beneath it.

Yellow's comment is:

Look how much buzz this new design has created! Everyone is noticing and talking about it. I think that the people in change of this rebranding knew exactly what they were doing. Smart marketing!

Also, don't forget about the difference between Art and Graphic Design. Art is meant to look good while design's main function is to grab attention of a product's core audience. This new design definitely feels like it's targeting high school students. Could they be Pepsi's code audience? If so, then Pepsi's designers should be happy with their job.

Entry Divider

Mark's comment is:

I think the RIGHT attitude to think about this redesign is even if you don't like it, you're still are going to have to get used to it.

I'm still not into this redesign, but I am getting used to the fact that this IN FACT will be Pepsi's new logo and it's NOT going anyway anytime soon.

Is it perfect? NO. Is it an improvement YES could it have been done better? yes.

Oh and PLEASE keep the juvenile comments to yourself.

You can't improve this logo design. They shouldn't have touched it. Pepsi is run by a bunch of idiots and they deserve to lose market share due to this lame-brain rebranding decesion. When I first saw the new pepsi logo I didn't even recognize what it was. I saw it on a bilboard that said love and nothing else. The logo was in the letter "O" in love. How stupid could you be to redesign you logo and make it unrecognizeable and then spend money to advertise your product with the new unrecognizeable logo and not mention the product name. Nike has a recognizeable logo...the swoosh. The word "nike" doesn't even need to appear next to the log for you to recognize the brand. UNless nike turned the swoosh into a retarded smile. Idiots!

The PEPSI logo looks like they gave the keys of their billion dollar jaguar to a dopey-headed 14 year old kid and said, "Drive safely now." The kid pulled the car onto the expressway and took the wheel at 70 mph and spun it wildly and smashed the company car into a shit-truck head on .. ON PURPOSE. PEPSI, that was a really moronic thing to do. Did you think this punk was going to drive your company safely? Someone needs to boot him in the ass. He doesn't care. PEPSI worked long and hard to come up with such a beautiful logo, the GLOBE, worked, sweatd, produced cool advertising, great taste, and then entrusted this to somebody who wanted to modernize it in a DESPERATE attempt to get a few sales. How weak. Who's in charge over there?!?

Anonymous's comment is:

HEY, too many people bashing the new logo, i work for pepsi as a stock guy, I had no say in the change and I am not part of the corporate end of things, but I do see these products all day long. On full shelves in stores these new labels look AMAZING, they have a flow of color in there simple design when you see then as a family of products, very professional look. I 100% love the new design. I thought, thou not entirely serious, of getting a tattoo of the old logo globe, however, only a few days after the new one came out the old one looks dated, very 90's, it too symmetrical. The simple one color design now brings out the symbol, the olds labels looked to busy. The smile does seem similar to Pac-man, true, I think so too. If you look at it closely you'll also notice the "pepsi E" gives an ode to the old symbol AND the smile grow bigger as more sugar or caffeine are added: diet caffeine free and Diet pepsi = small white smile band, pepsi and caffeine free = medium, and max (extra caffeine) is super exited!
This opinion of the product revamp is mine, I haven't been influenced to like or dislike the change, but I do very much like the step that pepsi is going in, I am not married to my job and I would quit if it ever goes in a direction I do not like. My opinion stands outside of the company, but knowing pepsi's intent behind the design I personally agree with. On opinions: to each his/her own

I think it looks great for the most part. They made it simple and finally went away from those retarded water drop effects that every soft drink company has been doing for 20 years. No more clutter is the best part about it. Keep it simple, cause the product sells itself. I never bought the product for its repulsive packaging it has went through for years.

Changing the logo a bit is nothing to fret about, it looks ok and it will be replaced by a newer version five years from now. But, with the CEO being finger pointed for the stock dropping, I think this is a bold move by her. The biggest problem is the "0 cal carb sug", it pretty much says welcome to the internet/text messaging english language. *shutter*

It's easy to deal with the new logo. Don't buy it. I look at every bottle, and if it has the piece of dogshit new logo on the front I just take my dollar to Coca Cola products, who stand behind their logo with courage and dignity, until I find a can of Pepsi with the old logo on it. It's not always easy to find, but I can switch to Coca-Cola I think in a heartbeat if I never found a can of Pepsi again. Fuck'em. If they wanna mess with a historical product. My dollar, and I'd encourage everyone to do this, take your dollar to a cola-dealer that stands behind their logo with confidence and pride. So far Coca-Cola does.

It doesn't look like anything except a copy of Coca-Cola's can design.

Jennifer's comment is:

I just saw this new brand for the first time in the grocery store last week. To be completely honest, it wasn't even me that saw it--it was my husband. I damn near walked right past an 8 foot section of Pepsi products before he stopped me and said "oh here it is." No, I'm not blind or stupid. I was looking for the old logo, which normally stood out quite clearly beside the dozens of other red, white and blue copy-cat products.

My first impression was to scrunch my nose and go "what?" The icon was somewhat recognizable, but looked too much like the cheap mimic local brand next to it. I did not get the smile at all until I read some of your comments about it. I couldn't understand why the icon was different between the diet, max and regular variants. The typeface was WAY too weak to even be noticable.

I don't see this rebrand sticking around for long. Much like Tropicana, they have seriously stepped backwards and look too much like a no-name bargain brand now. Didn't Tropicana recall their rebrand recently, too?

Entry Divider

Anonymous's comment is:

changing theyre logo makes them look weak compared to cocacola. See, coke would never change there logo because they have more all-round confidence... has nothing to do with which drink taste better.

I have to admit Branding is everything in business, but without any means of strategic marketing be it online or offline, your brand still would draw less customers.

I've known this site brandmelive.com that helps and guides and individual or startup company on how to create your own unique brand that stands out from the rest. In less than a month, I assure you, you will start to experience great amount of success on your brand or business with the efforts you put in. Believe me, I'm one of the million that benefited from that site.

MarcoSnow's comment is:

I can't get over how generic the new packaging is. Reminds me of the no-name brand crap they sell at your local grocery store, never a good sign. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It honestly feels like the new logos were slapped together last-minute using photoshop. Mountain Dew (sorry, I meant to say Mtn Dew) and Sierra Mist (nondescript font, check, generic blur effect, check) easily take the cake as the worst of the bunch, with "smiley condom" Pepsi bottles in hot pursuit on the fugly scale. Long story short: whoever's responsible needs to be fired (preferably in the literal sense).

Here's hoping that the packaging turns out better during the next re-branding cycle a few years down the road. It's official, soda's never been uglier than it is today.
